The National Museum of Ecuador, MuNa, was reopened in May 2019. Its new proposal is based on an alternative model that critically reviews traditional views of heritage, memory, education and communication. These visions have entrenched colonial and elitist values and have kept the institution encapsulated and out of contemporary cultural, social and political debates.

From this new perspective – which is based on the recognition of the multiplicity of identities of Ecuadorian society, its permanent transformation and mobility – the aim is to turn MuNa into a space for participation, dialogue, confrontation and representation of the public sphere.

The story of the National Museum of Ecuador is built around four cross-cutting themes: Knowledge production, Memory and Heritage, Gender and Interculturality, and Participation and Citizenship. And, two thematic axes: Political power and social organization and Territory, economy and work. These axes, besides crossing the museum discourse, seek to generate reflections and simultaneously provoke the curiosity of the visitor to know new readings of the past from the present.
