Atlas of the abstract and subjective history of Chile

Book’s Website

Territorial representation has historically been a key instrument for the knowledge, administration, and symbolic construction of a nation-state. In this context, atlases have assumed a central role as devices for spatial planning. By synthesizing geographic, economic, and social information, they guide both government planning and the general understanding of the territory by citizens. However, these representations are often mediated by technical and functional criteria that tend to render certain realities invisible and privilege homogeneous visions of the country. In response to these limitations, the Atlas of the Abstract and Subjective History of Chile is proposed as an alternative that seeks to document and make visible those human, symbolic, and cultural dimensions that escape conventional records.

This project is based on the premise that territory is not just a physical space, but a network of memories, affections, and identities that shape the richness and complexity of the nation. It is also a compendium of knowledge about the territory, the changes that human activity has wrought upon it, and the relationships between intelligence, will, and nature. In short, it is a mirror of the country. This project was carried out between 2009 and 2025. It is inspired by Claudio Gay’s Atlas of Chile and seeks to contribute to the geographical knowledge of Chile by adding images of places that have historical merit, whether for their social or political events or for their natural features.
