In 2023, former President Jair Bolsonaro attempted a military coup in Brazil. He is now on trial for this crime, which consists of the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. On January 8, 2023, the Planalto Palace was invaded by hundreds of far-right supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro in a coordinated action demanding military intervention in Brazil following Bolsonaro’s defeat by current President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva. The National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court building were also taken over that same day. The protesters sought to seize democratic institutions and reverse the election results. During the coverage, the press was also targeted by protesters, with many journalists injured, forced to delete their photos, or having their equipment stolen to prevent the press from documenting the event.
