The Truth Will Set You Free
Responsible for many of the most important photojournalistic records of the past decade —from the June 2013 protests, through the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, the missteps of the Bolsonaro government starting in 2018, its defeat in the 2022 elections, and the attempted coup of January 8, 2023— Gabriela Biló has become a true observer and visual interpreter of our time.
In The Truth Shall Set You Free, the iconic photographs of Brazil’s turbulent political landscape are brought together, captured through Biló’s lens and organized in collaboration with Cristiano Botafogo and Pedro Daltro, hosts of the podcast Medo e Delírio em Brasília. The images are accompanied by news stories, memes, and audio files accessed via QR codes, which together create a genuine aesthetic and emotional experience of the last decade in the country. The visual presentation was designed by artist Pedro Inoue.
The book also includes a letter from journalist Miriam Leitão to Biló, as well as a booklet with key texts to help understand this period, written by Atila Iamarino, João Wainer, Juliana Dal Piva, and Patrícia Campos Mello.
A precious record of Brazil’s recent history, The Truth Shall Set You Free makes use of a wide range of resources to better capture the complexity of Brazilian reality. The result is an innovative editorial project, committed to democracy and dedicated to keeping alive the memory of what must not be forgotten.
