Between September 19 and Christmas of the same year, the island of La Palma became the largest open-air laboratory in the world with thousands of scientists from different disciplines conducting experiments in what is already known as the Pompeii of the 21st century. Members of the Military Emergency Unit worked closely with anyone who asked for their help, to approach the fiery maw of the Cumbre Vieja volcano and collect the most dangerous samples for the subsequent experiments, carried out by scientific centers in Spain, Germany, England, USA, Japan or Chile.

Myths were demolished, new evidence of the collapse of oceanic island flanks was discovered and, above all, new hypotheses about the formation of our home, the Earth, were formulated. All these efforts will help in the future to better predict eruptive cycles around the world, as well as to better cope with natural disasters of this nature.
