Shelter

Accompanied by her daughters Tayla and Mayla, Taís breastfeeds her two-year-old son, Cícero João. Cícero has dwarfism and was diagnosed, at just one month old, with osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly known as “brittle bone disease.” Taís realized something was wrong when the baby broke his arm for the first time, at 28 days old. Since then, he has suffered at least 30 fractures throughout his body. Widowed and unemployed, Taís lives with her five children in the city of Várzea Grande, in the metropolitan region of Cuiabá, Brazil.
