POY Latam celebrates 12 years of uninterrupted work in favor of visual creators in Iberoamerica
Dear colleagues from Ibero-America:
Good news. POY Latam is back for its biennial event. We will receive entries from April 1 to 30, 2023 and the judging will take place from May 25 to 28. The categories and rules are already posted on our website http://poylatam.org/.
The pandemic is behind us, but the aftermath is still present. Inequity has deepened in our region. Dissatisfaction, nonconformity and anger are spreading in many of our countries, transforming political agendas. Of the ideas of utopian brotherhood and harmony with nature that we contemplated during the pandemic, very little remains. The world is brutal and cruel. And yet, in spite of it all, people celebrate, love, believe and cultivate hope.
We must fight against the simplistic attempts of the developed countries’ press to pigeonhole Latin America into stereotypes of violence and exoticism. We are undoubtedly much more than that. We have to appropriate our own narratives, tell our own stories, and do so without fear, without imposed rules.
That is the meaning of POY Latam: that we look from the south and towards the south, that we give ourselves permission to tell our own stories. And this is not a marginal or superficial issue. Building our multiple, hybrid, kaleidoscopic, diverse identity is an existential necessity.
Big changes are coming in the POY Latam of 2023. First of all Loup Langton, my dear friend and partner, decided to retire. Without his passion for Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, this space for reflection would not exist. A heartfelt thank you for his tireless work to train photographers throughout the region. He left a mark.
On the other hand, Kim Grinfeder, the good friend and director of the new film and multimedia area, also decided to step aside. He was the wizard behind the new technologies and the visionary who allowed us to think of new ways to tell stories. Thanks to Loup and Kim for their selfless work.
I stayed on as the sole director. For POY Latam to remain relevant, it has to be the result of a collective and horizontal reflection, so I asked an excellent group of colleagues to help me rethink the contest. Gael Almeida, Angela Berlinde, Maíra Gamarra, Manuel Ortiz, Yinna Higuera, Gisela Volá and Tiago Santana have formed the Advisory Board.
We will inform you in detail of the decisions taken, but allow me to make a brief summary: preserve free and transparent judging – what makes us unique ; create two sections, one for classic photojournalism and one totally open to new trends, with two different juries; rethink and reorganize the categories; eliminate second and third prizes, since it makes no sense to say that one work is superior to another; assume an egalitarian agenda and unrestricted defense of human rights; and of course, make the most important decisions as a collegiate body; institute POY Latam as a non-profit foundation; and promote, beyond the contest, a permanent educational agenda and a continuous presence in networks.
These are new times, and we are convinced that we will see the fruits of a more daring, more open, more Ibero-American and more relevant contest for our times.
Pablo Corral Vega
Director of POY Latam
RULES
We want to highlight the work of people who portray the complexity and diversity of Ibero-America, beyond exoticisms and stereotypes.
In all categories, respect for human dignity is essential.
Types of images accepted:
– In the POY Latam 2023 we will only accept images taken in Ibero-America, except in the categories “Photojournalists in the World” and “Photojournalist of the Year”, in which images taken anywhere in the world will be accepted.
– Images must have been made between January 1, 2021 and April 30, 2023, except in the categories “Our Gaze”, “Long Term Projects” and “Resignifying the Archives” which do not have this limit.
– In the classic categories, the images must reflect issues that concern society, always respecting the integrity of the scene and the circumstances encountered by the person who made the images.
– The open categories, on the other hand, accept traditional documentary images, but will also consider digitally created or manipulated images, or constructed images as long as such manipulation has a conceptual justification.
– Importance will be given to the narrative quality of the essays.
– Honesty regarding the techniques used and the documentary or artistic nature of the images will be highly appreciated. These considerations should always be included in the captions. Presenting an artistic image as journalistic could lead to the disqualification of the photographer.
– All photos must have been taken in Ibero-America except in the categories “Photojournalists in the World” and “Photojournalist of the Year”.
Who can participate?
– Applicants must be citizens of an Ibero-American country (meaning all of Latin America, plus Spain, Portugal and the Caribbean), or be a legal resident of an Ibero-American country for at least one year. If there is any doubt we will ask for proof of nationality or residency.
Collectives and independent photographers
– Photographs must be taken by an individual or a collective, and must bear only the photographer’s or collective’s name in the credit.
– Each journalist, artist or collective must fill out a registration form.
Registration
– Participation in POY Latam is completely free of charge, but each entry only allows the submission of up to 10 works/projects in total, and a maximum of 2 per category. A photo in a single photo category is considered as one work/project.
– Images must be submitted in the appropriate category. They will not be changed by the judges.
Preparation and shipment
– We have decided to use the Picter platform to receive the jobs. Unfortunately Picter only has instructions in English. We will publish instructions in Spanish and Portuguese for those who need them.
– The applicant will need to create a Picter account at https://submit.picter.com/ if he/she has not already done so. They will receive an email with a confirmation link. You can come back as many times as necessary to upload your material. The POY Latam will open in Picter from April 1, 2023 and will close on April 30, 2021 at 11:59pm, Quito and Bogota time.
– Videos in the Transmedia category should be submitted through our Film Freeway platform https://filmfreeway.com/POYLatam.
– Books should be submitted as soon as possible using the following form https://airtable.com/shrBufogCh0bKWnEE. It is best not to wait for the contest to open.
Captions and information
Captions can be indispensable when judging. Write captions in Spanish, Portuguese or English carefully. Incorporate your credit and information about where the photo was taken and the full caption into your file using a caption embedding program such as Bridge, Photo Mechanic or Lightroom.
– It is essential to fill in at least the following fields: Creator/Photographer (name of the photographer or collective), Caption, City, Country, State. Put the description of the whole essay in the “Caption” field of the first image of the essay.
– You will be able to sort the photos in Picter, and make sure that all the information is present as it will be automatically loaded from the file metadata.
Individual photos and series
– Only one image is allowed within each .jpg file, except in open categories.
– A photo may be submitted only once in an individual category.
– A photo submitted in an individual category may appear in only one series.
– Each series can only be presented once.
– All series or essays consist of a group of 5 to 10 photos, except those that offer other instruction.
– A series or essay should not be submitted more than once in the competition. If several versions of the same essay are submitted in different categories, the photographer may be disqualified by the jury. Only the “Photojournalist of the Year” category allows the submission of several essays submitted in other categories, as it is a personal portfolio.
File type
– Images can only be submitted as .jpg files.
– The minimum size is 4,000 pixels in height or width, but it is preferable to send them in their original size.
– If your original photos are smaller than 4000px on the longest side, we suggest that you enlarge them in photoshop so that they have the minimum size accepted by our platform.
– All images must be recorded in 8-bit, Adobe RGB (preferred) or sRGB color space.
Judging and winners
– The judging of the classic categories will be broadcast virtually on May 25 and 28, and the open categories will be judged on May 26 and 27. The jury will be announced soon.
– The jury will select one winner in each category and will select up to five outstanding entries. Second and third place will not be designated. We encourage the judges to highlight, whenever possible, a wide variety of entries.
– The jury has the power to declare a category deserted or not to award the first prize, but they are always encouraged to highlight the best works.
– The photography jury will meet online and review each and every photograph submitted to the contest. Unlike previous POY Latam competitions, and because the judging will be virtual, the jury will vote privately and anonymously within the Picter platform, and only the images that have received at least two affirmative votes will pass to the final round, which will be broadcast live on our social networks.
– The jury’s decision is final.
– Winners will be announced by Friday, June 1, 2023.
Awards
Photojournalist of the Year: US$1,000 paid directly by POY International.
Winners of the other categories: Certificates sent digitally and various prizes to be awarded by the sponsors, which will be communicated in due course.
The winners of the Transmedia category will be screened at the Museo de Imagem e Som de Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil on September 16th, 2023.

Copyrights
The copyrights of the submitted works belong to the persons who created the images. They grant POY Latam the international, irrevocable and perpetual authorization to reproduce the works submitted to the call for entries in any of its publications, web pages or exhibitions, always making reference to the photographer and the prize received in the contest.
The persons who submit their work to POY Latam guarantee that the work submitted is original and that they hold the copyright of the work submitted; and that the person who submits the work has the right to publish it physically or digitally or submit it for possible exhibition and grants POY Latam all the required permissions. The persons who apply to POY Latam declare that the works submitted to the contest (1) do not infringe the copyright, intellectual property, industrial property, personal or moral rights of third parties, as well as any other nature, including but not limited to, copyright, trademark, patent, professional secrecy, privacy, publicity or confidentiality obligations; and (2) that in no case do they violate applicable state, federal, provincial or local law.
POY Latam’s mission over the past twelve years has been to highlight the work of visual creators in Ibero-America. We believe in the importance of documentary photography and its commitment to the stories it tells, and that is why we have retained some of the most relevant categories for today’s times. We believe that photography expresses itself more deeply in longer essays. For that reason we have restructured the categories and created new ones in relation to contemporary narratives.
Open Categories
Photojournalism has changed significantly in recent years. Many visual creators move freely between art and journalism, and the rigid rules of the past have expanded to accept real or digital edits that are conceptually justified. The open categories of POY Latam allow a greater degree of creative freedom and the presentation of images that go beyond the traditional canons of documentary photography. The idea is to tell stories that help us question who we are and where we are going.
CLASSICAL FORMAT
In the classic categories, the images must reflect issues that concern contemporary society, respecting the integrity of the scene and the circumstances encountered by the person who made the images. Respect for the dignity of people is essential.
01 Everyday life (single photo) – A single image, which must have been taken in Ibero-America, of everyday life, of what is close to us, of our families and communities – which differs from current events or unexpected news events – and which helps us to understand who we are and where we are going.
02 Everyday life (essay) – A series of up to ten images, which must have been taken in Ibero-America, of everyday life, of what is close to us, of our families and communities – which differs from current events or unexpected news events – and which helps us to understand who we are and where we are going.
03 News (single photo) – A photograph of a news event or current social issue that must have been taken in Ibero-America.
04 News (essay) – A series of up to ten spontaneous photographs of a news event or current social issue, which must have been taken in Ibero-America.
05 Human Rights (essay) – A series of up to ten photographs that allow us to reflect on the importance of human rights in our region, and on recurrent and continuous threats to them. We subscribe to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The charter seeks to protect the rights and freedoms of human beings against abuses by states. We recommend presenting unexpected news events in the news category. The images must have been taken in Latin America.
06 Portrait (essay) – A series of up to ten portraits of people or groups of people that reveal their essence or personality. The images must have been taken in Ibero-America.
07 Sports (essay) – A series of up to ten photographs that promote appreciation for sport or celebrate the role sport plays in the lives of professional athletes, amateurs or the general public. The images must have been taken in Ibero-America.
08 Photojournalists in the world (essay): This category is open to photo essays taken outside our region, by people who are citizens of an Ibero-American country. There are many people who work outside Ibero-America, portraying the world for the big media or international agencies or for themselves.
09 Photojournalist of the year (portfolio): This category is open to individuals who work as professional photographers on a freelance basis, or in collectives, news agencies or newspapers.
The work should be of primary interest to a country, to Ibero-America, or to the world, and normally created with the intention of sharing it nationally or internationally. Individuals who cover stories nationally or internationally should submit their portfolios in this category. Only one of the essays can be done outside Ibero-America. It is permitted to submit these same essays in other categories as well.
The applicant should create a title slide (white text, black background) to separate the stories. Do not put your name on it, only the title of the essay. Fill in the IPTC title and caption fields with the title and description. Place the slide at the beginning of each story.
A portfolio must include at least two (2) narrative photo essays (of 5 or more images). Individual images may be included at the beginning of the portfolio, but it is not required. 50 images maximum (not including blackout slides). This portfolio should only include work published or created in the two years prior to the closing date of the competition. A $1,000 prize will be provided by the University of Missouri Columbia.
OPEN FORMAT
In these categories, real or digital manipulations are allowed, as long as they are conceptually justified. It is forbidden to submit works that have already been presented in previous editions of POY Latam. It is important that when digital techniques or even artificial intelligences are used, this is explicitly explained in the caption of the image.
10 Nuestra Mirada Award (essay) – In this category we will receive essays of up to twenty images. The award will be given to documentary or artistic works that reflect on and from Ibero-America. The category allows the submission of images taken at any historical moment. This year’s theme is contemporary baroque, excess, hypercomplexity, and the hybridization of Ibero-America.
As Fernanda Lopes says quoting the Cuban poet Sarduy, the baroque is: “substitution; proliferation; condensation; dislocation; juxtaposition; intertextuality; parody; eroticism; revolution.”
11 Long-term projects (essay) – This is a category in which essays of up to thirty images (30) may be submitted, and in which long-term projects will be considered, allowing us an approach to a significant theme for the understanding of our region. Four of the images in the project must have been taken in the last two years, showing that the creator is still working on the theme.
12 Resignifying the Archives (essay) – This category of up to twenty images will consider works based on images from archives and collections; or re-readings and re-significations of archives of different types, but especially photographic archives. We will be looking for projects that promote a dialogue between the past and the present, or that allow us to reflect on and from Ibero-America based on images of others or our own.
13 New Talents (essay) – This is a category that allows the presentation of essays of up to ten images and is open to visual creators who, regardless of their age, have less than five years of experience in photography. Documentary or artistic works that reflect on Ibero-America and its multiple identities will be awarded.
14 Environment, Carolina Hidalgo Vivar Award (essay) – This special category awards a photo essay of up to ten images that expands our appreciation for the caretakers of nature and our understanding of the damage we humans are causing to the environment, and the issue of climate change. Importance will be given to the human component, to the role that people play in the conservation or destruction of nature.
15 Identity and gender (essay) – few issues are as urgent as those concerning the situation of women, sexual dissidence, and racial and cultural identities. This category allows up to 10 images that reflect deeply on identity and diversities.
16 Transmedia (short film) – This category will receive works that combine multiple technical and artistic languages up to a maximum of 10 minutes in length. Video will be accepted as support, since this medium allows the union of moving images, audio and/or photography. Please send the videos through our platform https://filmfreeway.com/POYLatam. The winners of the Transmedia category will be screened at the Museo de Imagem e Som de Ceara in Fortaleza, Brazil on September 16th, 2023.
17 Photo books (book) – The books submitted to the contest must contain documentary or artistic photography and must have been published in the 4 years prior to the closing date of this edition of the contest. The images can be the work of one or more photographers. We recommend sending the books as soon as possible after filling out this form: https://airtable.com/shrBufogCh0bKWnEE as the mail may take longer than expected. The address is on the form.
